Darling is always crazy for Nasi Kandar, he just loves anything related with curry. When we were back for Raya holiday in Penang, he always wanted to try Nasi Kandar Beratur which is located next to Masjid Kapitan Keling after reading few food blogs review. As the name suggested, in order to eat Nasi Kandar Beratur, you have to beratur (queue)!
We had been here once but they were closed during the Raya break, came again as Darling was so eagerly to eat it, but this time was accompanied with big rain. We thought there would be less crowd in this bad weather, but still we need to queue for around 1 hour to get our turn.
The restaurant has its name Liyaqat Ali, but it is more famously known as Nasi Kandar Beratur
Bad weather did not affect their business tho
It was so cold to queue under big rain!
Due to the weather and less available seats inside the restaurant, many people chose to pack and take away their Nasi Kandar
This shop is just located next to Penang important landmark, Masjid Kapitan Keling
The shop starts their business at 10pm until 9am
History and news reports of this restaurant~
Price list, I wonder did they really follow it
Choices of dish
Bought 3 packs only, 2 packs for supper eater Dad and darling, since it was a late night I and mum just shared to taste
Banjir Nasi Kandar of Darling, 1 curry fish, 2 curry squids, 2 lady fingers and some cucumber slices
Dad's Nasi Kandar, a glutton like him ordered 2 curry squids, 1 fried chicken, 2 lady fingers, 1 curry fish and 1 curry chicken. But they gave 2 pieces of curry fish instead of curry chicken, so we don't have fate to test the curry chicken =.=
My sharing Nasi Kandar with mum, fried chicken is a must to me, then 2 curry squids, 2 lady fingers, 1 piece of curry fish. Curry gravy is quite good and not too spicy, fish is fresh but overcooked, squid is small and hard, lady fingers are just nice
Fried chicken, very hard to chew and quite dry, not so flavorful too
In short, in Penang there are still many Nasi Kandar shops selling same or better quality than this, they even sell at cheaper price and we consumers not even need to wait for a quarter hour. I think almost all customers are not original Penangites, at least this is the case for the man who queue in front of us. He is from KL and told us he have heard this place and wonder what's so nice here that cause people willing to queue up long time just for a plate of Nasi Kandar. And now is his first time to try, not sure whether he wanna make this as his final time. But for us, we all agreed to make this as our first and final visit, too much overrated and not worth for prices and one hour queue up time! Will only re-visit if no queue line build up and nothing to eat nearby.
Ratings
Food: 6/10
Price: RM47.40 for 3 packs (I think slightly higher than normal Nasi Kandar shop, they charged RM5 per piece of chicken, KFC even sell cheaper and nicer)
Environment: 4/10 (Ordinary old style coffee shop, but I feel not quite hygienic)
Service: 4/10 (Damn slow service, take one hour plus for 40 people queue line)
